Mama La Roosa is in-between the charming Greek villages of Agia Pelagia and Lygaria. The nearest sandy beach with fun water sports and a choice of friendly local tavernas, cafes and restaurants is a short 2.3km walk (or an even shorter drive) away. In the centre of Agia Pelagia, you’ll find several shops, as well as amenities including a supermarket, pharmacy and an ATM. The village also boasts a sheltered bay – the perfect place for safe swimming and snorkelling or relaxing on the sand.
Lygaria cove is even closer, 1.9km away. There you’ll find a sand and pebble beach with more calm waters. It’s abutted by several taverns and cafes for a welcome mid-afternoon snack.
In vibrant Heraklion, the capital of Crete, there’s plenty more things to see and do. Must-see sights include the Palace of Knossos – an exciting archaeological site dating back thousands of years to the Minoan civilisation, the Venetian port – a 16th-century Koules fortress on the outskirts of the city, and the Heraklion Archaeological Museum with an extensive collection of Minoan art.
Heraklion isn’t just about ancient sites though with top-notch restaurants, boutique shops and a lively nightlife too. It’s also home one of the best markets in the Mediterranean – with traditional Greek products like olive oil, honey and herbs – as well as idyllic sandy beaches. You can swim, snorkel or take part in water sports like sea kayaking and scuba diving. Moreover, for golf lovers, there’s a modern course not far away from Heraklion, in the area of Hersonissos.
