location

The oldest part of the town of Polignano perches on the clifftop overlooking the Adriatic sea, some 33 kilometres south of Bari. The marine grottoes under the cliffs are a fascinating natural feature and the well preserved old town and Roman remains, such as the bridge of the Trajan way which crosses the Lama monachile, are of historical interest. The ‘chiesa Matrice’ the church in Piazza Vittorio Emmanuele, the small main square of the old town is also worth visiting. The main industry nowadays is tourism and fishing but the surrounding countryside is also worthy of note – dotted with pretty villages and offering calm and tranquility and direct contact with unspoilt nature. For years, the beaches at Poligano a Mare have been awarded the Blue Flag for water quality.
