An historic city on the western Algarve, Lagos combines resort facilities with an introduction to the traditional side of Portuguese life. Relaxed and beautiful, the old walled city is a charming place to spend some time, and the marina and palm-lined promenade are pleasant spots for a bracing walk.
The 4km Meia Praia beach is one of the area’s main draws, and the eye-catching cliff formations of the Ponta da Piedade, full of caves and grottos, are another big attraction. You can take a boat trip to see them up close, which is highly recommended. This area is also considered one of the best to see the spectacular sunsets the Algarve is known for, and there is plenty of wildlife to spot while you are waiting.
The city has enough to keep you going for some time, with numerous restaurants serving some fine Portuguese cuisine, friendly bars and even some clubs, although it is generally much quieter and safer than the larger resorts. The zoo is a big attraction for the children, and closer than the many water parks found in the region, although these are still within a reasonable drive of Lagos. You can head east and be in the next big city, Portimao, in around half an hour. It’s an attractive place with a huge amount to see and do, including top-notch shopping and a pretty riverfront area where exciting events regularly take place.
Alternatively, head west and you’ll soon be in the dramatic National Park area on the Alentejo Coast – another spectacular stretch of Portugal’s coastline you won’t want to miss.
