Adventurous holidaymakers are drawn to the remote and dramatic Sagres. The landscapes are dominated by the power of nature. Pounding waves carve into the immense cliffs and challenge surfers. The Nature Reserve offers many hiking and cycling paths. The prevailing winds can be strong, offering watersports lovers thrilling times. The beaches are pristine, with some being sheltered and peaceful, ideal for families. There is something for everyone in Sagres. Those that do not want to take on the pounding waves can enjoy yoga, hiking or just relaxing in the Portuguese sunshine.
Villa Salimao II is situated within walking distance of the spectacular Praia do Martinhal beach and the town centre. Sagres is laid-back and chilled. It has many cafes, bars and restaurants, a buzzy, colourful market, a variety of shops as well as surfboard rentals, bicycle rentals and other watersport rentals. The nightlife is very good.
Praia do Martinhal has a long stretch of sandy beach with medium-sized waves. More sheltered is Praia da Mareta with its golden sand and lifeguard during the summer. It is lined with cool bars and restaurants. Next to the harbour is Praia da Baleeira and Praia do Tonel faces west, enjoy the best of the prevailing winds. It is a surfer and kitesurfer’s paradise. Praia do Beliche is another popular surfing spot. Sagres is the ideal place to learn to surf or kitesurf.
Most visitors in Sagres take a stroll to the Sagres fortress which sits on the top of a headland to the south of Praia da Mareta. There is a delightful cliffside walk inside the fort, a lighthouse, cave and a large wind compass. Most guests also visit the barren, most westerly point of mainland Europe at Cabo Sao Vicente. You can drive, take the bus or even a tuk-tuk to visit the remote point. The lighthouse beams can be seen 35 miles out to sea. You can take a challenging one day hike from Praia do Beliche to Cabo de Sa Vicente, past Telheiro Beach and through the hamlet of Santo Antonio and back to Beliche. The circular walk, offering spectacular coastal views is approximately 6km.
The nearest golf courses to Villa Salimao II are at Espiche, Palmares, Boavista and Morgado. Espiche has a gently undulating 18 hole par 72 course. Palmares commands magnificent views of the bay of Lagos and distant Monchique hills on its par 72 18 hole course. Boavista is 20 minutes from the villa and has an impressive 18 hole par 71 championship course and Morgado is laid out in a large 980-hectare estate. It is a par 73 18 hole course. The two championship courses at Amendoeira Resort, designed by legendary names in golf Nick Faldo and Christy O’Connor, both being par 72 18 holes, are one hour from the villa.
